Sylvia's Liquor failed to comply with a January 11, ABC board order clarifying that the store should install security cameras facing both east and west along Benning Rd. NE immediately. After receiving a complaint from LCA about the more than 60-day lapse, investigators visited the store on March 26. ABRA investigators verified that the cameras had not been installed, but issued an additional warning rather than a fine. Investigators are scheduled to return to the store by April 15 to ensure that cameras are properly installed or a case will be presented to the ABC Board. Despite recent incident, Carver Langston and other neighboring communities have seen a decrease in crime as compared to the same time-period last year according to statistics gathered by the Metropolitan Police Department. Most of the decrease in property crime is credited to an increased vigilance from neighbors about removing valuable from autos that had been targeted by thieves.
In addition to crime statistics ANC 5D also heard presentations from the Department of Public Works, Federal City Council on the Langston Golf Course Lease, Edens LLC on future development at Union Market and BYP100 on decriminalizing sex work in the District. The commission did not take votes on any of these presentations, which were all offered for informational purposes. You can view the full presentation at http://www.anc5d.org The ANC 5D Zoning & Development Committee is looking for a diverse group of new members. The committee will be responsible for reviewing any new zoning applications in our area and helping to gauge public opinion. This group offers ANC 5D the opportunity to engage more directly with neighbors and give more people the opportunity to influence decisions that will impact all of us.
If you have expertise in planning, architecture or zoning or if you just have a passion for this neighborhood and want to help, please contact your commissioner with questions and apply online to join the committee.
