The Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT) is a large, deep, sewer tunnel that will increase the capacity of the existing sewer system in the District. This tunnel will be passing through the Langston Neighborhood and is designed to help address issues with sewer flooding near some of our homes as well as improve the water quality of the Anacostia River. As many of you may have already noticed, construction has begun on the tunnel near Mt. Olivet Rd. NE.
Flooding has been a problem in our area since the early 1900's and according to experts is a result of our overworked sewer system. Currently, there is a 50% chance that flooding could occur in any given year and there are six areas throughout northeast DC that are plagued by chronic flooding. This project will significantly decrease the chance of flooding and provide a system capable of handling a major storm in our area.
The NEBT is the largest component of the Clean Rivers Project and will start just south of the RFK Stadium and extend north to Rhode Island Avenue and west to R Street NW. In the Langston neighborhood, construction of the NEBT will not pass through any residential areas and will occur completely underground. Above-ground construction began last month on Mt. Olivet Rd. NE which will be the only above-ground construction site in our area.
The NEBT is scheduled for completion in 2023. To learn more about the project please review the presentation.
