Come out this weekend to mark the anniversary of Langston Golf Course (2600 Benning Road NE) at the Langston Heritage Celebration. Langston Golf Course takes its name from John Mercer Langston, an African-American abolitionist, U.S. Representative from Virginia during Reconstruction, and the first dean of Howard University School of Law. The course was established in 1939, and at the time it was one of only two local courses where African-American golfers could play. GolfDC hosts the annual Langston Heritage Celebration to commemorate the rich history of African-American golf. It's a celebration of gratitude toward the course's community of nationwide supporters and a welcome to its future generation of golfers. The festivities will take place Saturday, June 9th from 12pm to 2pm. This family friendly event is open to the public, and you can even ride the DC Streetcar to get there. Free Activities · Event exhibits and golf gifts (12–2pm) · Free full swing lessons at the driving range (12–1pm) · Free short game lessons at the practice green (1–2pm) · Visit with Langston historians & take part in the Heritage Trivia Challenge (12–2pm) · Free fresh popcorn and face painting compliments of DC Streetcar (12–2pm) · Nature exhibit of park flora & fauna compliments of the National Park Service (12–2pm) · Free golf giveaways every 15 minutes (12–2pm) Special Offers (all day) · Free frozen treat at the Langston Clubhouse Grille while supplies last (6am–7pm) · Free range balls with 9H or 18H greens fee (6am–7pm) · Discounted range balls -- small $2; med $4; large $8 (6am–7pm) First of all, thanks to everyone who made this project a success. The Langston Civic Association partnered with The Mission Continues, BAE Systems Inc., Mayor Bowser's office, Cm. McDuffie's office as well as community volunteers to renovate the courtyard at Browne Education Campus. More than 20 volunteers showed up in the rain to help pull weeds, build new picnic tables and organize the courtyard to give the children a beautiful outdoor space for studying. The garden now boasts more than 50 new plants including a vegetable and herb garden. We will be hosting Part 2 of this service project at some point this summer. Due to the weather, we were unable to paint and would like to ask neighbors to keep an eye out for details about that fun, upcoming project. Also, neighbors with herbs and vegetables to donate to the children's garden should contact [email protected]. Thanks! BEFORE & AFTERThe Work We Do MattersEven if you do not live in our community and would like to donate to the work that we are doing to help improve the lives of the people who live here, please donate. Community organizations like ours need your support.
The Langston Civic Association submitted the first application to ANC5D's grant program. We are requesting funding in order to support the after school and summer programs for kids at the Patsy V. Hartsfield Center which has been offering out of school enrichment in our community for over a decade. This grant would specifically support the following activities:
The DC Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862 ended slavery in Washington, DC, freed 3,100 individuals, reimbursed those who had legally owned them and offered the newly freed women and men money to emigrate. It is this legislation, and the courage and struggle of those who fought to make it a reality, that we commemorate every April 16, DC Emancipation Day.

The Langston Civic Association applied and was accepted to the Anacostia Watershed Society's s environmental education and community beautification program. One aspect of the program helps communities design and paint several small murals on storm drains in the neighborhood. Please give us your feedback about the type of art and messages you would like to see.
These murals last for a long time, so please select images that you would be proud to see for years to come.
